This is a shrub which is widely cultivated in Nigeria for its culinary and medicinal uses. It has a rich aromatic flavour. The Yorubas call it efirin, the Igbos call it Nchuawu, the Efiks/Ibibios call it Ntong. It is used in the treatment of fever, colds, diarrhea, convulsion, and it is also recommended for weight loss.
With such medicinal benefits it is no wonder that this plant could be found in almost every compound in Calabar when I was growing up.
