Fara (Fried Locust)

Fried Locusts
Fara is a delicacy from Borno state of  North-east, Nigeria. It is deep fried desert locusts. The locusts are caught and briefly put in hot boiling water that has been seasoned. They are then spread to dry before deep-frying in vegetable oil. It is served with powdered pepper which is called yaji.

It is crunchy and delicious. Some locals actually call them desert shrimps (I laughed really hard when I first heard it). Locusts are high in protein, zinc and iron, so you also get some health benefits from this tasty snack.
